VOLENDAM and MARKEN, two villages at the waterfront of the largest lake in the Netherlands.

VOLENDAM, once a fishing village, is nowadays a main tourist attraction, a paradise for souvenir hunters.

MARKEN turned from an island into a peninsula in 1957. Thanks to the connecting road it is now visited by people from all over the world. Fortunately it hasn't lost its characteristic atmosphere.
Walk along the small harbour, look at the neat houses and picture how isolated this place was in the past. True, you can see the mainland overlooking the lake but keep in mind that this lake was once a sea, affected by the tides.
During certain weather conditions it was impossible to reach the other side. The villagers suffered from countless floods, many didn’t survive.
Dutch Excursions can arrange transportation for almost every budget to this region and will show you the most interesting sites.
